Topical/Vertical: Healthcare and IoT

Motivation 

The cost of healthcare services is increasing as the global population is aging and the  number of chronic diseases is on rise. The increasing average life expectancy across the  countries has added up to the burden of global healthcare expenditure like never before.  While nothing can stop the aging or eradicate the chronic diseases, but the advances in  technologies like IoT, 5G communication, edge computing, and Big data can change the  hospital-centric treatments to home-centric treatments. IoT based healthcare has unparallel  benefits of cost, efficiency and quality of service.  

Objective 

The objective of healthcare and IoT vertical summit is to bring together the researchers,  academicians and practitioners to share their experiences and present results through panel  discussions and presentation sessions. The presentation and discussion will focus on the  IoT enablers for healthcare, state of the art IoT testbeds for healthcare, privacy and security  issues for health database, and medical IoT devices and platforms.  

Topic Description 

Recent healthcare has become smarter with the use of wearable sensors to perceive  information, transmit information through 5G and IoT, and processes the information  using fog / edge computing. The increasing demands on the network in terms of  bandwidth, security, and latency are the challenges to be addressed in connecting the  IoT Medical devices & platforms. The 5G network is expected to fulfill the requirements  of the healthcare applications like ultra-low latency, high bandwidth, ultra-high reliability,  and high energy efficiency for the low power wearables. The combination of the 5G and  IoT devices are the future of the healthcare domain that includes disease prevention and  monitoring, diagnosis and treatment, hospital management, and health decision-making.  The emergence of implantable/wearable smart devices and smart health information  platforms connected by IoT technology provides a solution to this situation. Optimization  of the medical resources, increasing the energy efficiency of the low power devices,  maintaining the appropriate privacy and security of the patient data, and enhancing the  quality of services would be the major objectives of IoT based healthcare. 

Structure: 

There will be total 2 sessions of 45 minutes each. The topics to be addressed are as: 

  • Session I (Moderator: Dr. Suchismita Chinara) 

o IoT enablers for healthcare (5G, Fog / edge computing, Big Data etc.) o IoT Testbed for remote healthcare 

  • Session II (Moderator: Dr. Asutosh Dutta) 

o Medical IoT devices & platforms 

o Privacy and security in IoT healthcare

Dr. Suchismita Chinara

Dr. Suchismita Chinara is currently working in the Department of Computer Science and  Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (India). She has above 10  years of experience in teaching and research. She has also worked as the adjunct faculty  member in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, San Diego State  University, USA in 2013. She received her Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and  Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (India). Her current  research interests include Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks, IoT, Fog Computing,  and Computer Networks. Dr. Chinara has authored over 80 scholarly articles in the areas  of wireless networks and IoT. She has received several awards for her research papers and  publications.

Dr. Ashutosh is an IEEE Fellow, Chief 5G Strategist, Founding Co-Chair IEEE 5G  and Beyond Initiative. IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer, ACM  Distinguished Speaker. Accomplished technical and computer science expert with  30 years of experience directing multiple IT operations, research and development  for leading global technology corporations and top universities. Seasoned Mobility  and Security Architect, Chief Technology Officer, Senior Scientist and project  manager with in-depth expertise in developing and implementing research, analysis,  and design initiatives. Expertise in computer communication, wireless networking,  LTE networks, Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and mobility management.  Author of 30 issued patents and 90 publications. Editor-in-chief for Journal of  Cybersecurity and Mobility published by River Publishers.
