Disrupting Media and Entertainment in the 5G Era

Media and entertainment is one of the most disruptive vertical market that has received limited focus in the context of 5G. Mobile network operators are increasingly interested in acquiring media assets, which enables provisioning of new services and act as potentially new revenue streams. The requirements for novel media content formats and means of efficiently delivering them using 5G networks are currently being investigated. Recently, the concept of augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) over wireless networks has generated an unprecedented interest from academia and industry. The success of an immersive VR experience hinges on solving a plethora of grand theoretical and practical challenges cutting across multiple disciplines, and industries. Enabling the cost-efficient delivery of such media and entertainment content using 5G networks would be the main focus of this special topical.
The special topical is organised and technically co-sponsored by one of the flagship research projects in the Phase-II of the EU H2020 5G-PPP initiative: 5G-Xcast. The 5G-Xcast project is focused on Broadcast and Multicast Communication Enablers for the 5G of Wireless Systems. The project will develop point-to-multipoint (PTM) communication capabilities for 5G. The technology solutions will primarily target the technical requirements of the Media & Entertainment (M&E) vertical. 5G-Xcast brings the M&E vertical into 5G-PPP, bringing together for the first time major and small and medium size players from mobile/fixed/broadcast industries.

|Panel on the ‘Future of Media in 5G’|
Mauricio Aracena is Media Standardization Manager at Ericsson and he has more than sixteen years’ experience in working with multimedia technologies for the mobile phone industry. He has actively contributed in defining the next generation multimedia standards for 3GPP, ATSC and DVB, recently in the area of High Dynamic Range. Currently, he is the Secretary and Board Member of the Virtual Reality Industry Forum (VRIF); he also co-chairs the Distribution Task Force within the same organization. Mauricio holds a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and an MBA from Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden.
Dr. Zúñiga is a computer engineer from Costa Rica. He holds a doctorate in Informatics and a master degree in Multimedia from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, as well as a master degree in Information Systems from the Costa Rican Institute of Technology. These studies served as a starting point for his 3D journey, studying stereoscopic Graphical User Interfaces, and more recently VR, where he focused on WebVR and is interested in defining the “semantics of depth”. He currently works for Samsung Research UK, as a Senior Engineer/Web Advocate for the Samsung Internet browser. You can find more information about his projects at diekus.net.
Klaus Doppler, Nokia Bell Labs
Klaus Dopper is heading the Indoor Networks Research in Nokia Bell Labs developing enabling technologies for multi-gigabit indoor networks with a 6th sense. In the past, he has been responsible for the wireless research and standardization in Nokia Technologies, incubated a new business line and pioneered research on Device-to-Device Communications underlaying LTE networks. He has Klaus received his PhD. from Aalto University, Finland in 2010 and his MSc. from Graz University of Technology, Austria in 2003.
